Pretty Heroes is more than Canada’s premier girl-power fandom convention; it’s a celebration of “the strength, resilience, and empowerment of women and girls.” From its origins as a Sailor Moon-themed gathering to its evolution into a broader platform for female-led narratives, the convention embodies the belief that “Everyone Can Be a Hero.”
But what truly sets Pretty Heroes apart is the care and intentionality behind how they create a safe, inclusive environment for every attendee — from first-time con-goers to long-time fandom veterans.
At the heart of Pretty Heroes is a mission rooted in positivity and representation. According to their website, the event seeks to celebrate “the beauty of spirit, mind, and compassion exemplified by inspirational female characters and real-life women and girls.”
This mission isn’t just lip service — it’s woven into every aspect of the convention, from programming and guest selection to volunteer roles and community outreach. By centering emotional strength over superficial traits, Pretty Heroes makes space for a wider, more inclusive definition of heroism
Volunteers are essential to Pretty Heroes, and the convention offers a variety of roles to ensure a smooth, supportive experience for everyone:
Registration Desk – Welcoming attendees, checking badges, and helping people feel at ease as they walk in.
Crowd Control / Badge Checking – Ensuring lines stay orderly and helping maintain a safe flow throughout the venue.
Setup & Dismantle Assistance – Helping put up event infrastructure and tear it down afterward.
Craft / Gaming Activities Assistance – Supporting creative spaces where fans can build, play, and learn.
Dealer Assistance – Helping vendors and attendees navigate the dealer hall and fostering a friendly, accessible atmosphere.
Programming & A/V Assistance – Supporting panels, workshops, and tech to make sure everyone’s voice is heard.
In-Person Promotion – Spreading awareness about Pretty Heroes at community events, conventions, or in the local scene.
Online Roles – From social media coordination to moderating Discord chats, Pretty Heroes also leans on remote volunteers.
Perks for Volunteers:
Volunteers who complete a minimum of 9 hours receive free weekend admission.
Crew badges, snacks, water, and meals are provided during shifts.
High school students: Pretty Heroes signs community service papers.
References: Volunteers can request a reference letter within 90 days of the event.
These roles don’t just keep things running — they build a supportive network where volunteers are part of the mission, not just side characters.
Pretty Heroes doesn’t publish a publicly accessible, detailed “Code of Conduct” as a stand-alone document, but their volunteer expectations reflect a strong commitment to respect, inclusivity, and safety:
Volunteers must attend orientation so they clearly understand their responsibilities.
There’s a minimum shift length (4 hours for at-event crew) to ensure consistency and accountability.
Dress code for volunteers: no ripped clothing, sleeves required, and bottoms must provide full coverage.
Volunteers may optionally cosplay, but only if it meets the attendee dress code and does not interfere with their duties.
For safety and well-being, volunteers are encouraged to bring sunscreen if they’re outside, and Pretty Heroes provides water and snacks.
For remote volunteers, Pretty Heroes welcomes help with admin, social media, Discord moderation, and more.
By clearly setting expectations, Pretty Heroes ensures their volunteer team represents the same community values held by attendees.
Pretty Heroes actively builds programming that appeals to a broad spectrum of fans, with inclusivity built in:
Their “What’s On” schedule includes craft workshops, panel discussions, video game zones, live performances, and more — catering not just to hardcore cosplayers but to creators, thinkers, and younger fans.
The convention’s programming team allows people to apply to run panels, workshops, or performances, fostering community ownership.
The atmosphere is designed to feel safe and encouraging, not cutthroat — Pretty Heroes emphasizes collaboration over competition, creativity over spectacle.
Pretty Heroes operates as a not-for-profit event. Profits after expenses are reinvested into future conventions. This financial model helps ensure that the convention remains accessible, not just a commercial enterprise, and that the community itself benefits.
Pretty Heroes is more than a convention — it’s a safe space, a celebration of strength, and a real community built on respect, creativity, and inclusive fandom. Whether you attend or volunteer, you’re part of a mission: to uplift heroic stories and the people who love them.
